Mode Factors — The Official Numbers
LIC uses mode factors to convert annual premium into sub-annual instalments. These factors include a "mode loading" — a small extra charge for the convenience of paying in parts.
How to read: If yearly premium = ₹50,000, then:
- Half-yearly = ₹50,000 × 0.5131 = ₹25,655 per instalment
- Quarterly = ₹50,000 × 0.2577 = ₹12,885 per instalment
- Monthly = ₹50,000 × 0.0866 = ₹4,330 per instalment

20-Year Impact — How Much Extra You Pay
Over a full policy term, the extra cost adds up significantly:
*Based on ₹50,000 annual premium for 20 years. Approximate figures.
💡 The math is clear: Monthly mode costs you ₹39,200 extra over the policy term for a ₹50K annual premium. For higher SA policies (₹1L+ annual), the difference is even larger — ₹78,000+ extra just for choosing monthly over yearly.
Which Mode Should You Choose?
Zero extra cost. Best if you have savings to cover the full annual premium at once. Most cost-effective option. Also easier to manage — just one payment per year.
Only 2.6% extra. Best if you can't pay the full amount at once but can manage two payments a year. The loading is the lowest among sub-annual modes.
3.1% extra. Best if your income is quarterly (e.g., freelancers, business owners). Manageable frequency with reasonable loading.
3.9% extra. Best if you're salaried with monthly income and prefer auto-debit from your bank. Most convenient but costliest option. Good for cash-flow sensitive budgets.
How to Change Your Payment Mode
You can switch your payment mode anytime — no charges:
Visit your LIC branch or write to them
Submit a mode alteration request with your policy number
Change takes effect from next premium due date
No charges for mode change — it's free
💡 Expert Tip (Haresh Hirapara): If you're currently on monthly mode, switching to yearly can save you thousands over the policy term. Many of my clients switch to yearly after their income stabilizes. If paying yearly feels heavy, try half-yearly — it's the best balance between convenience and cost (only 2.6% extra). Consult your LIC branch for the exact premium calculation after mode change.
